This course is designed specifically for the student interested in understanding the functions of a crime analyst. Students will explore crime analysis as well as methodology and procedures that have been penned by leaders in the field and endorsed by the international Association of Crime Analysts. By the end of the course, they will learn the history of crime analysis as well as its importance in the law enforcement field. Students will also learn basic statistics and the responsibilities of tactical, strategic and administrative crime analysts.
After completing this course, students should be able to discuss the development of crime analysis in law enforcement and describe its fundamental concepts. Students will also learn how analysis categorizes criminal behavior and differentiate between strategic, tactical and administrative analyses. They will also use critical thinking skills to recognize crime patterns and perform basic statistical operations related to crime analysis.
