The most common way to enter this career field is obtaining an online associate's degree or one from a community college. This training will give students the background necessary to compete in the field.
Some programs combine paralegal training with studies in other subject areas. Courses may include legal research and writing, legal ethics or an array of courses focused on different law specialties, such as criminal law or employment law.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), paralegals help lawyers prepare for trials, hearings, closings and corporate meetings. They assist behind the scenes doing research into past cases, suitable laws and legal articles; oftentimes, they write up their findings into a report. Paralegals may also aid lawyers in drafting contracts or preparing trust funds.
There are many different areas of law that a paralegal may work in, immigration, family, corporate or healthcare.
Although law firms are the most common employer of paralegals, professionals in this field may also work for government agencies or in corporate legal departments.
