This course provides students with the theory governing how computer hardware and operating systems function. Students will receive significant instruction within the scope of personal computer design while learning how to maintain and operate systems.

It is important to understand the basic components that make a computer work. This course explains the types and functions of hardware and software and explains how they work together. This course also goes into detail about how the operating system uses and manages memory to meet the needs of applications software. It gives an overview of the different types of memory, the history of memory use, and discusses how to upgrade and troubleshoot memory modules.

Hard drives will also be discussed in this class. Students will learn how to manage data on a previously installed hard drive, how to install a new hard drive and how to use software packages to help manage hard drives. Troubleshooting is one of the most important skills to have when managing and maintaining a PC and students will walk through useful methods for troubleshooting computer problems.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to describe the functions of software and hardware, explain the relationship between physical memory and how data is stored on floppy disks, and the basics of electricity and how a computer system can be protected from changes in power.
  • Participants will be able to describe basic hard drive management and installation concepts, general procedures for troubleshooting and installation, multimedia devices and how standards have shaped the industry.
  • They will also be able to explain the basics of modems, including how to connect to a network, how to support and troubleshoot printers as well as how to guard against viruses and develop a disaster recovery plan.
