Network Security Courses

The combination of protecting network integrity, availability and confidentiality is the foundation of any working security plan within a network. Students can expect to learn how to defend network assets by implementing appropriate countermeasures after evaluating threats. Topics covered include analysis of threats, methods of protection, vulnerability and adoption of policies and procedures to secure access for remote and local network users. Students will also discuss strategies for securing Internet access between public and private networks.

In this course, students will define security and what it means to them as well as explore the foundation of network security concepts. By the end of the course, students will be asked to make a security plan. Security is the process of protecting resources such as information, physical assets, reputation, livelihood and health. Access controls -- such as smart cards and login/password -- ensure only authorized individuals can access resources and encryption prevents unauthorized individuals from viewing data if resources are accessed. Firewalls also protect internal networks and systems from Internet attacks and ruthless hackers.

Hacking is the term used to describe the act of an individual who plans “attacks” on computer and information systems that are not his. There are many reasons why a person might hack into another person’s system including obtaining credit card information, copying documents or accessing other important pieces of data. Students will learn how to create programs that block hackers from accessing important information.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of this course, students will have evaluated common access attacks and security technologies used to protect network resources and ensure data availability as well as the physical and communication security risks associated with managing data flow and resource access. They will assess security requirements for both networked and stand-alone computers, and analyze and apply file and folder level permissions to grant or deny access to users.
  • They will create a basic security policy and security maintenance plan in compliance with industry standards as well as a basic security design for a local area network.
