Accounting PhD

Obtaining a PhD in accounting is the ultimate level of accounting education. Like many PhD degree programs, a PhD in accounting often entails significant individual study and research as well as a final dissertation that must be defended in front of a committee of academics in the field. A high degree of mathematical ability is commonly required to successfully complete the program as many problems in accounting require advanced mathematics to effectively formulate and solve. In general, PhD students in accounting will also require an understanding of modern software and technological techniques, advanced financial planning skills, how to work with and create budgets, and an advanced understanding of taxation and regulation.

The average PhD in accounting takes over 4 years to obtain and will prepare the holders of the degree for a variety of professions. One such profession is to become an instructor in accounting and pass the knowledge on to the next generation. A PhD in accountancy also brings such opportunities as working publicly as a government accountant, tax examiner, or revenue agent. On the private side there are careers such as budget analyst which is a position that provides advice to companies on how to manage their costs and operations. Cost estimation, another field requiring high levels of education in accountancy, deals with the analytical skills earned during a PhD in accounting program. Graduates may also consider working as a loan officer for a bank, analyzing risk, and helping people and businesses to obtain funding.
