Today’s business climate can be tense; it’s very common for negotiations over a number of issues to be in full swing at any given time between companies, trade unions, management, and government agencies, among others. People who are heading up negotiations need to have highly trained and developed skills. Many managers and executives make the decision to complete an advanced negotiations certificate in order to increase their negotiation skills. In an advanced negotiations certificate program, students will be exposed to numerous critical negotiation tools and approaches, including strategy development that meets the needs of participants on both sides of the table, at the corporate and personal level, negotiation preparation and strategic analysis, how to hold participants accountable, and how to handle cultural and experiential differences. Coursework may include information on how to use psychology as a tool in negotiations, and how to avoid common negotiation mistakes. While some certificate programs focus on negotiation strategies for business in general, other programs may have a specific focus, such a trade negotiations, law enforcement negotiations, or negotiations for global management. Advanced negotiations certificate programs generally take about six months to complete, but programs vary. There are programs available for both on-campus and online settings. Some programs may have requirements for admission that include previous business management experience.
