An associate of arts in fine art degree is part of a two-year track program geared at providing a learning base for all the arts. Through the course of study, students gain a comprehensive understanding about basic design principles and how to effectively apply them through a variety of media, and are taught communication and analytical skills relevant to the discipline. The coursework is typically used as an introduction to the fine arts and is designed for students that plan to go on to pursue higher degrees. Many students, however, choose to begin working after earning their associate’s degree, seeking entry-level jobs relative to their interests in places like art galleries, museums, and theaters. Some use this time to build their artist’s portfolio, with the goal of becoming a paid artist, while others use this time to begin developing a different concentrated career. While the careers most closely related to the field of fine arts are fairly narrowed to these art-centric establishments, there can be other options within the business world. Students might use an associate of arts in fine art, for example, to look for work within a company or division that focuses on the visual component, in places like advertising agencies or marketing companies. Or an associate of arts grad might seek work in the media itself, working in radio or television as a promotion or production assistant.
