Students today have more options than ever when it comes to higher education, and one of the reasons for thatisthe many degree options available in both traditional campus formats andthrough online educational opportunities. Even though numerous opportunities are available, it’s not unusual for students to enter college unsure of what direction they want to go in. Students who aren’t sure which direction they want to take, but who are invested in a college education may want to seek an associate of science in general studies. There are several advantages to a general studies degree program. Often students can decide to take elective classes in a variety of subject areas in order to complete their degree requirements. They may choose to take some classes in psychology or some in computer science to fulfill their elective requirements. Of course, students will still need to fulfill the core general education requirements in mathematics, literature, the sciences, and humanities. General studies programs are also ideal for students who are returning to school with credits already under their belt. They may be more readily able to utilize existing credits that are already on their transcript towards graduation requirements.General studies degree programs vary by institution; while some programs allow students to choose any elective credits, other programs are designed to have more structured courses of study. Be sure to check with your advisor for guidance.
