Home > College Degrees > BA in Communications: Graphic Design
Graphic design is about communicating ideas through visual display by properly presenting information and correlating graphics to the message and purpose of that information. A bachelor’s degree in communications with a concentration in graphic design can teach such principles by studying the many elements that contribute to an overall work such as typography, contrast, hierarchy, information architecture, and more. The process of producing pieces for print applications will likely be taught, as the methods of preparing colors, printers, monitors, and other necessaries for digital proofing can be complex. Students may also be familiarized with the standard tools of the trade involving advanced image and photo manipulating software. The foundations of illustration as well as computer-based illustration software could also be taught.
As trained graphic designers, graduates of the bachelor in communications degree with a concentration in graphic design may be qualified to handle graphic creation and manipulation in many fields. As illustrators, graduates could be able to produce artwork for use in marketing departments, ad campaigns, and brand/identity management. Graduates can also look to the web to work as web designers, and may therefore look forward to opportunities working in design studios or as independent freelance contractors. Sophisticated design studios also have need of qualified designers for interactive media applications.
