Political science is a field as old as politics and government itself. Ancient Greek philosophers wrote about the issues surrounding government and politics and it appears that many of those issues persist to this day. With a degree in political science and government, a student can hope to learn the principles behind governments and politics, the issues that surround politics and government historically as well as presently, and about the many different forms government and politics take along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Students will also be provided with a solid foundation in critical thinking, communication, and history as it applies to government.
Degrees in political science lend themselves to many varying careers. Among them are law, reporting, journalism, lobbying, and jobs in the public sector. Each has its advantages; though lobbyists and lawyers tend to make the most money of the bunch, they will also require further education for which political science and government is a great start. A solid understanding of politics and government can even be helpful for a career in the business world as many businesses are bound tightly to government contractors, government regulations, or funding and subsidies that depend highly upon political winds and trends.
