A focus on reading great works of literature while earning credits in many traditional liberal arts courses is what a bachelor of arts in English language and literature will provide. The English language aspects to the degree will train the student in matters such as grammar, composition, linguistics, and writing. However, literature will also be given a large emphasis with strong courses and a great deal of reading in American literature, British literature, and works of literature from other English-speaking countries. When reading, attention must be focused on comprehension, as analytical and thesis-driven essay writing may test the student’s ability to intelligently converse about the stories and subjects they have read. A background in literary criticism will also be given so that many standard techniques regarding the analysis of literature can be applied.
A bachelor of art in English language and literature entails that students will understand how to think critically and communicate effectively, thus making them qualified for many careers. Some popular careers with the degree are journalism, public relations, copy writing, content creation for the web, and teaching. Students that continue to pursue their studies with higher education can look forward to becoming professors and scholars in specific areas of the English field or on specific authors and works of literature.
