Bachelor of Arts in American Studies

Understanding the forces that forged America leads to an understanding of the nation as it has grown throughout its history from fledgling country to world superpower. A bachelor of arts in American studies will teach students about those forces by examining the political, economic, historic, cultural, religious, and sociological contexts in which America was born. The degree is therefore multi-disciplinary, as an understanding of many fields will be required. Students will also learn about the progression of American history and society through the years that will aid in providing an understanding of America’s past, present, and future. In addition, philosophical perspectives and a study of American literature will help bridge the gaps in comprehension regarding the many changes and conflicting ideas that have become a part of the American story.

Once a bachelor of arts in American studies has been obtained, graduates will have a deep knowledge of many subject areas that involve critical thinking, research, analysis, reading, and writing, hence leading to many careers that utilize such skills. Careers in law, government, social work, journalism, or teaching are great options for graduates. Those that continue their education to higher levels may also look forward to careers in business and research.
