Although accounting and finance are often linked, they are two separate fields. Accounting is the practice of looking at a company’s expenses or analyzing what it has already spent and the money that it has made in order to get a better idea of a company’s profit margin. Finance is often more strategic, more about planning. Financial managers create budgets detailing what a company plans to spend and the profits that it expects to earn. As you can see, these roles naturally coincide and act together to form a larger financial picture. Because of this overlap, many companies prefer to create positions that require expertise in both accounting and finance. This may be the reason why the line between the two fields is often blurred. It is also why many professionals choose to earn a degree like a Bachelor of Business Administration – Accounting and Finance degree instead of choosing one emphasis area over the other.

Many colleges offer accounting and finance together as one specialization for business administration majors; other schools prefer to require students to choose two separate specializations.
