This degree can be found as either a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education degree or as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art with an art education emphasis. Either way, this degree is commonly pursued by students who have the ultimate goal of teaching fine arts in K-12 schools. Those who want to go into teaching studio art classes to adults may want to look into earning this degree as well. If you want to teach fine arts at an institution of higher learning, however, you will probably need to earn a master’s degree in a particular art medium such as painting or sculpture.
Since many states require teachers to be licensed, many Bachelor of Arts in Art Education programs are designed to prepare students to become licensed in the state where the degree is offered. This degree is commonly a blend of all studio arts such as ceramics, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. In addition, the curriculum will probably include courses on art education and early childhood development. Students might also learn important skills such as how to teach art to children with special needs. Some colleges may even have hands-on practicum courses where students actually interact with young art students.
