Today, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration encompasses much more than simply being able to draw. The main goals of a professional illustrator are to be able to communicate feelings, tell a story, or effectively help in marketing using illustration. Illustrators today need to communicate their message or their client’s message using not only traditional art techniques, but also new and emerging technologies, including computer-assisted illustration. BFA programs in Illustration focus on curriculum that will help students succeed in the commercial market. That means that programs focus on traditional techniques such as drawing, oil painting, and watercolors, as well as techniques that engage new media, like digital typography and graphic design. During the four-year BFA in Illustration degree program, students will create a comprehensive portfolio of work that will help them seek employment in the commercial field of illustration. BFA in Illustration programs emphasize a high level of professionalism, working independently and in teams to produce high quality work from inception to completion. Often, projects will focus on specific commercial applications, such as editorial illustration, or marketing and advertising for products. These types of student projects give students the opportunity to learn valuable skills such as art direction, layout, and design.
