Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design

A Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design is a discreetly different program than either a strictly architectural degree or a strictly interior design degree. In fact, in many ways it is an intertwining of the two disciplines with one distinct feature: the study of interior architecture and design is focused on repurposing architectural and design elements that are already in existence for new dimensions in purpose, use, and aesthetics. A Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design is a four-year program that focuses on both design and construction elementsfor bringing new life to existing buildings or architectural spaces. Many Interior Architecture and Design programs focus mainly on industrial and commercial space, while other programs incorporate learning elements for both residential and industrial adaption to new uses and spatial design. In addition to fundamental program considerations such as structural issues, architectural design, and materials, students may also be required to understand other more esoteric concerns, such as design aesthetics, environmental concerns, and the relationship between light, color, and space. Students will be required to take a number of drawing and design courses, and may have to produce a portfolio and models of proposed redesign and renovation projects. Some schools also require an internship that allows the student to be exposed to real working environments and interior architecture and design renovation and repurposing projects.
