At the highest levels, an education in business may provide deep statistical and mathematical understandings of many subject areas relevant to the field. A doctoral program in business administration aims to provide students with not only a mastery of many in-depth business topics, but also in areas pertaining to leadership and original research. Students will likely take courses pertaining to research, mathematics, statistics, economics, and finance to bolster any existing business education. Studies will be regularly evaluated, and at some point during the program, the studies will transform into independent research into an original topic that will serve as a dissertation necessary for successful completion of the program. The dissertation must be successfully defended in front of a panel of experts, but guidance will be provided along the way by a PhD advisor that may help students navigate the obstacles.
With a PhD in business administration, graduates of the program could become learned in the field of business, ready to lend their expertise to in-depth study of many topics such as globalization, economics, business ethics, and more. Graduates may seek opportunities for research from think tanks or universities. In the case of universities, graduates may also look forward to becoming professors of business administration, passing on the knowledge to new students. As experts in matters of business, graduates could also make great consultants for other businesses, perhaps working independently in a self-employed capacity.
