The doctoral degree in community college executive leadership, also called a CCExL, is a specialized EdD built for master degree holders that are looking to expand their career opportunities with additional credentials. While this track is rooted in educational principles, it is not an intended route for future higher education educators. Most EdD programs assume and/or require applicants be already licensed to teach. Instead, the doctorate focuses on organizational, leadership and management techniques and applies them to the community college model.
Graduate students are commonly employed professionals of institutions, seeking opportunities to advance their careers to management faculty or administration positions like dean, president, director, and more. The CCExL provides the training needed to address a number of administrative duties relative to running a community college, and often is directly responsible for providing the guidance needed to properly do the job. In addition to being well versed on college processes, laws, and practices, graduates may also be taught how to initiate, implement, and adapt to changes in policies and curriculum, which could also make this degree relevant to certain governmental jobs. For the most part though, CCexL grads might go on to use their degree in a path naturally progressive from their existing careers.
