English/Literature & Culture Bachelor's

The relationship between literature and culture is closer than many think. A bachelor’s degree in English literature and culture will help students to bridge the gap between the disciplines of literature and the society in which the works were written. Historical perspectives are important for such a degree so there will be an emphasis on literature in different time periods with knowledge about the prevailing wisdom and styles of the time. Other disciplines such as music and art may be necessary to study as well to help gain perspective on a culture and a particular work of literature. The study of many types of literature will also test a student’s critical thinking skills and ability to analyze, draw conclusions, and defend opinions.

Degrees in English literature and culture are great for teachers of secondary education, especially English teachers. The broadness of the field and focus on thinking skills helps to bring about an education that is well-suited to teaching others. In addition, those that continue to seek higher education will have a great background from which to draw upon and build a career as a professor and researcher at a university.
