Environmental engineering degrees prepare students to effectively manage engineering processes using sustainable practices, waste management, and green technologies. A doctoral degree in environmental engineering is an upper-level degree that represents the highest level of achievement in the field. This graduate degree is focused on problem solving, teaching grad students how to properly evaluate the developing structures and processes that make up the community, and understand how to improve them with regards to sustainability. Skills taught in this kind of doctoral program are highly technical and scientific, and may require anywhere from three to five years to complete.
Because environmental engineers focus on creating solutions, this degree can be used in a variety of industries. A student might use their degree in a geological firm, for example, to assess earth samples to test things like pollution and waste run-off. The doctoral degree might allow them to make suggestions to their firm on how to minimize impact. Another example of degree use might be in system maintenance and design, where a doctoral degree holder could use their expertise to recommend the best materials to use in a building project to save energy.
