Many fields of study share key similarities in the thought process required to understand them and work well within them. An interdisciplinary studies bachelor degree with a concentration in communication may provide a broad perspective to the student.
First, students often take a variety of courses that build upon many skill sets. An understanding of the thinking required for liberal arts, mathematics, the sciences, history, economics, and similar fields of study may be imparted. With a broad point of view on learning, students will see the structure that underlies many disciplines, giving them a unifying perspective.
Next, students often study courses that are specific to the communication arts concentration including business communication, media communication, writing for media, research, rhetoric, social influence, public relations, intercultural communications, organizational communication, creative writing, and ethics in communication. Students could become adept at many styles of communication including persuasive, analytical, reporting-style, and technical.
As well-rounded graduates in many subject areas, many career paths may be open. But with a specialty in communications, certain professions may be especially good choices. Public relations may require many of the communication techniques presented in the degree. Graduates may also be well-suited toward careers in marketing or advertising departments. Both marketing and advertising may involve research, analysis, and the communication of a particular message using persuasive ability.
