Ireland has a long and storied history that encompasses every facet of the human experience from great tragedy and oppression to today’s new, emerging multicultural population of Central European immigrants. People have long been fascinated with Ireland and Irish culture, in part because of its rich history but also because of its contributions to culture and the arts. Irish writers such as W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett, to name a few, have greatly influenced literary studies around the world. The history of Ireland itself is also a study in the struggles of humanity as the Irish people have endured war, poverty, oppression, starvation, and a mass exodus of people over the course of time. People who are interested in Ireland and Irish culture may want to consider completing an Irish Studies Certificate. An Irish Studies Certificate will help students understand the cultural, economic, and sociopolitical world impact of a country with a rich and deep history. Students will become immersed in Ireland’s literary and cultural contributions, religious history and architecture, as well as knowledge of Irish historical and political events that have shaped not only Ireland, but also the world. Depending on the certificate program students will be required to take between four and eight courses covering topics in Irish history, religion, culture, literature and politics, to earn the certificate.
