People who have already received a bachelor’s degree and are interested in pursuing a career as a professional writer or teacher may want to consider seeking a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. An MFA in Creative Writing is for students who wish to refine their skill in creative writing across a variety of genres or in a particular genre. While some programs may focus on a single literary genre such as young adult literature, other programs may focus on several genres during the course of the program. Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing programs that have a multi-genre approach may give instruction in numerous areas including poetry, play- and –screenwriting, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Most MFA in Creative Writing programs will take up to three years to complete since it is a terminal degree, which is the highest educational level that is achievable in a given field. Many programs offer a low-residency option, which means that students may only need to be present for classes for a short period of time each semester, completing the rest of their studies independently or online. While some programs may require a thesis for completion, other programs may require the completion of a literary work in their area of specialty. Students can also expect to participate in writing workshops and discussion groups, as well as attend numerous lectures and discussions with visiting published authors.
