1. CAN YOU STILL GET INTO COLLEGE WITH A LOW SAT SCORE?
Even if you have low SAT scores, there is still a chance of getting into college. For one, according to the NCES, 52.2% of all colleges have no application criteria. This means, they may not look at standardized test scores like the SAT at all.
Many colleges are now test optional too. Test optional colleges let you decide to submit test scores or not. Then there are test flexible colleges. A test flexible college may accept a wider list of scores than the SAT. As a result, you have a bit of wiggle room if you got low SAT scores and want to play up other qualities. Your high school grades for example. References, personal essay or community service.
The International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement (AP) exam scores are a few. Some may also accept the scores of the ACT Assessment Test or the SAT Reasoning Test. You must check. Bottom line – there may be many colleges that you can apply to. And, if you are unclear about a school’s admission policy, reach out to them. They may have options.
As of 2018 the 51st percentile SAT score is 1060. That is to say 51% of test-takers score below 1060. But your percentile is not the only number you need to know.
2. WHAT IS CONSIDERED A LOW SAT SCORE?
To understand what a low SAT score you have to look at your scores in context. This is because how “low” your SAT score is will depend on which college you hope to attend. First though, it may be useful to understand the SAT and scoring. The SAT has two sections. ERW (Evidence Based Reading and Writing) which tests your use of the English Language. And Math which tests your ability to problem solve.
When you take a test, you get two section scores – one for ERW, and one for Math. There is also an optional SAT essay. But these scores are separate. To calculate section scores, your raw score gets converted to a scaled score of 200 to 800. This means the lowest possible SAT score is 200 for ERW and 200 for Math.
You also get a total score (ERW + Math scores). Total scores range from 400 to 1600 with 400 being the lowest. And these scaled scores are the ones provided on SAT score reports. The national average, or mean SAT, looks at the scores of all high school graduates. It records these figures and shows trends from year to year.
According to the College Board, the national averages for the SAT were
- Evidence Based Reading and Writing: 531
- Math: 528
- Total: 1059
As these are averages, some people score 1060 and higher, or above the norm. And others score anywhere from 1058 down which is below the norm. But if you get 25% of SAT questions right, you score above the lowest score. There are also average scores for ethnic groups, family income level and gender. Each state and college also have their own averages.
There’s a general rule that If it falls around a given school’s 25th percentile, your score is low.

3. MAKE SURE YOUR APPLICATION SHINES
Generally speaking your application is important! To be sure, whether you’re applying to college with a low SAT score. Or, taking the test optional route, the rest of your application may matter more than ever. Overall, you are going to want to have as strong an application as possible.
