DID YOU KNOW?

Your cumulative GPA is the average of all of your grades over a particular time period. For instance, colleges may look at your cumulative GPA from 9th through 12th grade.

HOW TO GET INTO COLLEGE WITH BAD GRADES

Even if your grades aren’t ideal, you may still be able to get into college. Some schools offer conditional or provisional admissions for applicants, meaning students may have another chance to prove they are ready for college-level coursework. And some schools may give applicants the chance to bypass GPA requirements by other means – like earning a minimum ACT or SAT score.

Alternatively, you could show how work experience has shown you what you want to study and that you have a passion for the field through letters of recommendation. Or, you can study and earn higher scores on the SAT or ACT.

In other words, you can’t turn back the clock and fix your high school performance, but you could potentially find another way to prove to your prospective school that you are college material.

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT APPLYING TO UNIVERSITIES WITH NO GPA REQUIREMENTS

If you’re not proud of your grades, or if you earned your GED and have no GPA to send to prospective colleges, finding schools with no GPA requirements may be your priority. But finding your ideal school may be more complicated than simply searching for colleges that don’t publish a minimum GPA.

Here are a few more considerations for applying to colleges with no GPA requirement:

1. UNDERSTAND WHY YOUR PROSPECTIVE COLLEGE LISTS NO GPA REQUIREMENT

A holistic approach to admissions means that the school considers the whole you and not just your grades. Many colleges that have no GPA requirement look at your application in this regard.

However, other colleges choose not to list a minimum GPA because it’s a given that applicants are high achievers.

Learn as much as you can about the school’s philosophy and approach to admissions. You might even be able to find out the average GPA of accepted students, to see if you’re in the ballpark.

2. MAKE THE REST OF YOUR APPLICATION STAND OUT

Fortunately, you may be able to demonstrate your academic aptitude in ways besides beside GPA, such as with a strong SAT score or letters of recommendation from teachers and guidance counselors who can vouch for you.

3. EARNED YOUR GED? CALCULATE YOUR GED SCORE TO GPA

While your prospective college may not ask for this, you can still learn what your GPA would be. Simply divide your total GED score by the number of sections on the test you took (usually five) to get an average. Then, divide that average by the highest possible score you can get on the GED (typically 800) to find your percentage.

Finally, multiply your percentage by the grading scale you wish to use (typically 4.0) to get your GPA. Some schools also list minimum accepted GED scores, which should help you figure out whether you potentially qualify for admission.

4. DON’T MAKE EXCUSES

If you didn’t perform particularly well in high school, own up to it and provide an explanation without blaming others. Admitting you might have made some mistakes along the way isn’t just human; it’s a sign of maturity admissions representatives may respect.

5. HAVE A UNIQUE PROBLEM WITH YOUR GPA? TALK TO ADMISSIONS.

Students who have questions or are unsure how to proceed when applying to college with a low GPA or no GPA should contact the schools they are interested in.

For instance, if your GPA was particularly low due to a personal crisis such as illness or family hardship, it may be important to explain the circumstances to your prospective college. Some schools may accept documentation that proves your case.
