What is an HBCU? 

An HBCU is also known as Historically Black College or University founded prior to 1964. HBCUs may serve students of any race. But, their goal is to further the education of black Americans. 

HBCUs also must be accredited by an accrediting agency. Or, they may be accredited by an agency approved by the Secretary of Education. Currently, there are over 100 schools that fit this description. Maybe one of them is perfect for you!

This list of top HBCUs was developed using College Scorecard. College Scorecard identifies 96 schools as Historically Black. We have listed the top 15 below by greatest average salary after attending the school.

1 Xavier University of Louisiana
Visit XULA


Xavier U of Louisiana is Catholic and an HBCU. Around 3,300 students attend Xavier, 71.6% of whom are black. The school is known for helping students pursue global leadership and service. Choose from 45 academic majors. Xavier is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Undergrad Admissions

To apply to this school, students must submit their high school transcripts and GPA. And, don’t forget SAT or ACT scores! Some students may need to submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign language) scores. Completing a college prep program is also suggested.

Howard U is a private research school. It offers programs in over 120 areas, across 13 schools and colleges. Howard is well known for its STEM programs and its law school. (The first African American Supreme Court Justice was a grad from Howard!) The school serves students based on the motto, Truth and Service. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

The mission of Spelman College is to educate women of African descent. It was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary. Bowie State University was founded in 1865, making it one of the oldest HBCUs in the country. The school strives to create a diverse, supportive environment.
