WHY DO COLLEGES OFFER NO APPLICATION FEE?

Many accredited online colleges have no application fee. This aims to expand the pool of applicants. And, with no fee to apply, may also make admissions fair and open.

In colleges that do have fees, you make a payment when you submit your application. This money is not refundable. As such, it adds up if you apply to many schools at once.

Schools tend to charge a fee to attract students who are serious about attending. The fee is also to review and process your file. Colleges with free applications may instead ask for an enrollment deposit. So, once admitted, you pay it to commit and keep your place.

Having a no app fee policy does not guarantee the school will admit you. But you lose nothing if you send in an application. This can take away some financial stress and save you hundreds of dollars.

HOW MUCH IS THE AVERAGE APPLICATION FEE?

According to a 2018 survey of 979 colleges, the average cost of an application fee is $43. This means some may be more affordable than the norm and charge fees such as $15, $25, $30, etc. And others may exceed it. Colleges in the more costly range often charge $75 or $90.

Most students apply to about 7 to 10 schools. This includes ‘safety schools’, ‘target schools’ and a few ‘reach schools. If you apply to 10 schools at $43 it’s $430 that you are spending on the college app process.

WHAT IS THE COMMON APPLICATION?

The Common Application is an easy way for students to apply to a variety of undergraduate programs. Because it takes away the hassle of completing each application individually. With more than 900 member schools, students can complete one application and send to many schools.

As always, each school has unique requirements. So Common Application provides a checklist for each school. The process is available to first time or transfer students. And entails four simple steps.

  1. Create a user profile. Your user profile goes into your courses and activities in depth. It is the equal to an entrance essay and paints a picture of your goals and interests.
  2. Make a list and add colleges. Here you decide what features you are looking for in a college. As you search the data base, you create a list of the ones that align.
  3. Get your checklist of support material together. To apply to these colleges, you may need to furnish extra documents. These are things like transcripts, SAT scores, awards, references and so on.
  4. Submit applications. You first review your application. After you pay your app fee, you sign your form and hit ‘submit’.

ARE THERE APPLICATION FEES WITH THE COMMON APPLICATION?

There is no fee to register, create an account, and complete applications using the Common Application. However, each school may still charge an application fee. You need to pay the fee before you can submit your application. You may be able to find colleges with no application fees through the common app.
